CHAPTER ONE
Pinekit crept towards the duck. It was sitting next to the Duckpond, eating a piece of Twoleg food. It smelt of water, feathers, and fresh-kill.
Pinekit licked her lips. She did not know how many times she had hunted duck, but she knew that this one was fatter than most fresh-kill that ForestClan normally hunted.
The duck finished it’s meal, waddled over to a bush, and tucked it’s head under a wing to sleep.
Pinekit tensed her legs and sprang at the duck, ready to sink her teeth into it’s neck, bring it back to the Clan, and present it to the elders. She was inches away from the duck when it turned it’s head and said, “Pinekit.”
Pinekit opened her eyes and saw her brother Bronzekit standing in front of her. She had been dreaming.
She stood up and looked around the hollow log that housed the ForestClan nursery. Their mother Snowflakespaw, a pure white she-cat, lay next to Pinekit, her chest rising and falling as she slept in their nest of soft ferns, feathers, and moss. A few paw-lengths away lay Sunshine, curled protectively around her kits, Featherkit, Penguinkit, and Griffinkit. A thickly woven door of brambles, branches and ferns, hardened over the years, lay against one opening of the log, protecting the queens and kits from the cold air and predators. The other end was pressed against a rock. Sunlight filtered in from a tiny opening at the top of the nursery, warming Pinekit’s long, brown and white fur.
She looked back at her brother. He wasn’t much older than her, but he was much bigger and, unlike her, an orange and white tabby tom, not a persian like her.
He dropped a blue jay at her paws and said, “You were looked so sleepy, I grabbed something for you while I was at the fresh-kill pile.” he picked up his own squirrel from where he had dropped it on the ground and started to chew.
“Thanks.” Pinekit bowed her head and chewed at one of the blue jay’s feet. The forest scent washed over her. “Mmm”. She had finished the leg and started on a wing before she realized that Snowflakespawn was gone. “Where’s mother?”
“She’s okay.” Lynxclaw, a beautiful bengal cat, sat near the door nursing her kits, Fernkit and Rainkit. “She went out to grab some fresh-kill.”
